The story of Cobblestone Arts Center began with a simple yet radical belief: that the joy of the arts and performance belongs to everyone. Long before we were a multidisciplinary center, Cobblestone began as Wheels in Motion, a wheelchair dance company dedicated to carving out space for artists of all abilities.
Central to that history, and to the heart of our Executive Director, Lorene Benson, was a man whose spirit was as extraordinary as his performance. Recently, we said goodbye to Miguel Ortiz, Lorene’s longtime dance partner of over 20 years.
A Chance Meeting on the Court

Their legendary partnership didn't begin in a studio, but on the high-energy hardwood of a basketball court. Lorene recalls attending a game played by the Rochester Wheels, a local adult wheelchair basketball team. As the players wrapped up their session, Lorene approached them with a bold question: was anyone brave enough to try dancing with her?
"Miguel did not hesitate and said he would," Lorene shares. "We began this great artistic relationship, and I had no idea the impact that we would have on so many different audiences."
Changing the Narrative of Disability

Miguel didn't just dance; he used performance to tell his story, opening up about his life and the struggles he had overcome. For Miguel and Lorene, the mission was clear: use the arts to show the world what is possible when you refuse to be defined by a chair.
As Lorene puts it, "Teaching and showing the world what is possible was all part of this mission for us."
From New York to the World Stage
Over two decades, Miguel and Lorene took their message of inclusion across borders and into the hearts of thousands. Their journey together included dancing at schools and arts centers across New York State, performing in Toronto in 2002 for the historic visit of the Pope, and even being accompanied by a 70-piece orchestra and the voice of Disney’s Ariel, Jodi Benson at a performance in Ohio.
"How wonderful all these experiences were for both of us,” Lorene reflects. “I could not have done this without him."
An Unforgettable Spirit

While the world saw a talented dancer, those close to Miguel knew a man who filled every room he entered with a sense of joy. His presence was impossible to miss and even harder to forget.
"His bigger-than-life personality was nothing that anyone could ignore," says Lorene. "His belly laughter and booming voice I will always cherish. I am blessed to have had him in my life and will forever be grateful for what we created together."
Continuing the Legacy
Miguel’s legacy lives on in every class taught and every performance held at Cobblestone Arts Center today. He was a pioneer of the inclusive spirit we continue to foster, proving that rhythm doesn't require footsteps, just a heart willing to move.
Rest in peace, Miguel. Thank you for the dance.
